The best free courses for UI / UX Beginners in 2022

As opposed to running out and buying any number of design courses, I’d suggest starting with some free Youtube courses to get some experience and momentum on your side.

Learning a UI / UX Tool

To best begin learning aspects of UI and UX, it can be useful to have familiarity with the tools that designers use. I would not suggest worrying about becoming a “master” at the tools themselves, but rather just being familiar enough so they don’t get in the way of your learning.

Check out Figma, as it’s free, has an amazing community, and available on every platform including as a web app:

Figma

With Figma installed, the following great Youtube design courses can help you learn the application with a specific focus on designing UI and UX. What’s great about these videos is that you’ll be learning aspects of crafting UIs and UX while becoming familiar with the software itself.

To start, Dan Scott has some excellent courses for learning Figma and becoming confident:

From FreeCodeCamp, Adrian Twarog brings you through process of designing a website UI using Figma step by step:

Joseph Brendan also on behalf of FreeCodeCamp gives an incredibly thorough Figma UI course, with 10 hours of education for how to use Figma for UI Design:

Understanding UI / UX more fully:

With the tools understood, now focus on courses teaching UI / UX design itself.

Specifically, Gary Simon from DesignCourse has an incredible library of free courses on Youtube all presented in a format that is easy to follow and very helpful. One great free course to start with:

You can begin to look into conversations about UIs and UX more broadly now to understand why certain design decisions you’ll make will help your users and the goals of the business. Some example videos:

Jared Spool is a leader in the UX space. Though many of his talks are larger scale targeting organizational shifts to a design and UX mindset, his ideas can help lead you to strong design decisions:

Designing for Speed by Mustafa Kurtuldu:

The UX Infinity Gems 6 Ways to Create Great UX by Jordan Lawrence

And with that you’re on your way!

There are a lot of paid courses you can consider as you advance, but you’ll be well served by consuming and learning all you can from great teachers on Youtube first.

Cheers to your great UI / UX learning!
